“I can’t believe there is a band from round here playing the blues like that!”

So said some dude in a hat at a recent gig. We take it as a compliment! Hailing from a Hertfordshire town a long way off the blues history map, the Lamps proudly spread the word to as many as possible.

Sometimes funky, sometimes fast, sometimes low-down, a little bit country, gospel and often improvised, we put our spin on the work of artists like Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, early Fleetwood Mac, ZZ Top, B. B. King, Johnny Cash, Tommy Tucker, Johnny Otis and many many more - as well as throwing in a few originals of our own.

The Low Lamps were formed just over 3 years ago (summer 2008) in Harpenden, following a chance re-union of Ryan (vox, guitar) and Martyn (guitar).

Having not seen each other for over 10 years since their old grunge band parted ways, time (and bad luck) had mellowed these two old rock hounds, and they decided to go back to their roots and play the blues.

Jon (drums) and Tom (bass), were well known as a top-drawer local rhythm section and soon jumped on the Lamp wagon.

Pretty soon, the 5th Lamp joined the scene.  We are immensely lucky to have the near legendary Andy (Hot Gravel) Stokes, making long, rambling road-trips down to select gigs, adding his encyclopedic blues knowledge and incredible hammond and harp skills to the mix.

Various guests join us on occasion, be it Lorraine, Anj, Katie, Max, Danny, Bowser (dog/model) – basically, come and have a go if you think you’re blue enough!
